Solar Panels on the White House
It’s not difficult to imagine solar panels on the White House…because they’ve already been there in one form or another. In 19080 President Jimmy Carter had a solar thermal collector installed to produce hot water, only to be removed a few years later during President Ronald Reagen’s tenure. In the 90s the National Park Service, under President George W. Bush’s Administration, installed photovoltaic panels (for electricity) and solar hot water panels on facilities near the White House. More recently, the Obama Administration pledged to bring solar power technology back, 31 years after the Carter Administration first installed solar panels on the White House.
“Last October, after a campaign led by 350.org, the Obama Administration committed to installing a new set of solar panels on the White House roof by the end of Spring 2011. June 21st is the first day of summer and we want to remind the administration that we expect them to meet their own deadline.”
